Our Professional Aeration Process

The Kelly Kare Core Aeration Process
Restoring your lawn’s health, one square inch at a time.
Most homeowners know their lawn needs to breathe, but they worry about the mess or hitting a utility line. At Kelly Kare, we’ve refined our process over 35 years to ensure a thick, healthy lawn without the stress.
Step 1: Safety & Preparation (J.U.L.I.E.)
Before we ever touch your grass, we prioritize safety. We coordinate with J.U.L.I.E. (Illinois One-Call System) to mark underground utility lines.
Homeowner Tip: Please mark your private lines (sprinkler heads, invisible dog fences, or low-voltage lighting) with flags so our equipment stays clear!
Step 2: Professional Core Aeration
We don't just "poke holes." We use professional-grade machinery to remove 2.5 to 3-inch soil cores (plugs) from your lawn.
- Reduces Soil Compaction: Essential for the heavy clay soil common in the Fox Valley.
- Enhances Nutrient Uptake: Allows water, oxygen, and fertilizer to reach the root zone instantly.
Step 3: Premium Over-seeding
While the holes are open, we apply a high-quality seed blend specifically selected for the Northern Illinois climate. Dropping seed immediately after aeration ensures "seed-to-soil contact," which is the secret to a thick, carpet-like lawn that naturally chokes out weeds.
Step 4: Natural Breakdown
We leave the soil plugs on the lawn. Within 1–2 weeks, these plugs break down, returning vital nutrients and organic matter back into your soil.
Why Fall is the Best Time for Batavia Lawns
In Illinois, the window between late August and early October is the "sweet spot." The ground is warm, the air is cool, and the weed competition is low—giving your new grass the best head start before the winter freeze.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to aerate my lawn in Northern Illinois?
In our area (Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles), the "sweet spot" is typically from late August through early October. This allows the new seed to germinate in warm soil while the air is cool, giving it time to establish before the first hard freeze.
Do I need to be home when you aerate?
No, you don’t need to be home! As long as we have access to the yard and all pets are safely inside, we can complete the service. We just ask that you have your underground lines (sprinklers/dog fences) marked before we arrive.
How long do the soil "plugs" stay on my lawn?
The soil cores (plugs) usually break down in 7 to 14 days depending on rainfall and mowing. As they dissolve, they return valuable organic matter and nutrients back into your soil. We recommend leaving them there—they are like a "free" top-dressing for your grass!
What is J.U.L.I.E. and do I have to call them?
J.U.L.I.E. is the Illinois utility locating service. We handle the call to J.U.L.I.E. for you! It is a legal requirement to ensure we don’t hit underground power, gas, or water lines. Note: You are responsible for marking private lines like invisible fences or irrigation.
How soon can I mow after aeration and over-seeding?
We recommend mowing your lawn slightly shorter than usual right before we arrive. After we seed, try to wait about 2 weeks to mow again to give the new grass sprouts a chance to take hold.
